That sentence makes me wonder about the place in your canon of poets and philosophers of the existentialist thinking of (for example) Sartre and De Beauvoir.

Hi Caroline, many thanks for reading and commenting. I think that's a really good question and interestingly, I just finished a book about Hayden White arguing that his approach to history (with its emphasis on literature, narrative, and philosophies of history) was mainly driven by an existentialist (and moral) commitment to making history 'matter'. So yes, much more to think about there. Many thanks again. x
